Demystifying Fad Diets

The session was conducted by Ms. Erum Jhumra, PNDS Registered Dietitian, held on 23rd Feb 2013 at The Kidney Center. About 60 enthusiastic participants attended this session. This audience included PNDS members as well as nonmembers. The session encompassed comparison of popular fad diets, topic related latest researches and a case study. Erum had invited 2 of her clients to share their weight shedding experiences. She also shared their follow up data collected over the last 2 years in terms of weight management program. Topic related pre-reading material had been mailed to all PNDS members. Post quiz sheets and attendance certificates were given to the participants

Role of Exercise in Mgt of DM and GDM

PNDS held a CNE on 29th December, 2012 at the Kidney Center PGTI, Karachi. In keeping with  World Diabetes Day the CNE covered the“Role of Exercise in Diabetes Mellitus”by Dr. KhurramShahid(Consultant Diabetologist & Endocrinologist)and “Nutritional Management of Gestational Diabetes” by VajeehaAzeem(Nutritionist).

About 40 participants attended this interactive session. Both the Speakers shared latest evidences and research with the audience. Topic related pre-reading material had been mailed to all PNDS members. Post session Quiz was also taken. Participation in CNE and completion of quiz is equivalent to 1 Credit hour for PNDS RDs.

CNE coordinator, SaimaRasheed moderated the session. Feedback of the participants will help us to include more relevant topics and to overall improve the sessions in future.The next CNE is planned for February 23rd, 2013. Hope to see you all then

Nutritional Anemias

A PNDS Continuing Nutrition Education (CNE) seminar was held on 28th April 2012 at “The Kidney Center". Badder Hina, a Senior Dietitian of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), presented her talk on “Nutritional Anemias".
Overall 72 participants attended the CNE. Out of which there were 53 Regular and Associate members, 9 Life members and 10 nonmembers.
Towards the end of the session a quiz related to the talk was distributed. Attending CNE and participation in quiz is equal to 1 Credit hour for Registered Dietitians of PNDS.
The pre reading material, presentation and quiz are accessible for members on PNDS website.
The next CNE is planned for 30th june 2012. The topic will be “Case study on Gastritis”. Hope to see you all then.

Vitamin D

PNDS held a CNE on 24th December 2011 at the Kidney Center PGTI, Karachi. There were two presentations this time. Nilofer Safdar Fatimi presented "Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin". Dr. Aysha Habib  shared her experiences with us by presenting “Vitamin D Deficiency: Research Experience in Pakistan”. As elaborated by Nilofer, the topic was chosen in consideration of the present worldwide interest in Vitamin D and it’s deficiency.
About 72 participants attended this interactive session. Topic related pre-reading material had been mailed to all PNDS members. It was expected that the material will help the participants to come prepared for the session. Quiz sheets were distributed after the presentation. Attending the CNE and participating in the quiz is equivalent to 1 credit hour. The CNE presentations and answers to the quiz have been posted on the PNDS website (CNE page, accessible to PNDS members only)

Pediatric Nutrition Ass. & Magt. of Malnutrition

PNDS held a CNE on 29th October 2011  at the Kidney Center Post Graduate Training Institute Karachi . The title was "Pediatric Nutrition Assessment & Management of Malnutrition". Kehkahsan Zehra Hossain”(Consultant Dietitian, SIUT) was the presenter.

This was the first time pediatric nutrition had been addressed in a PNDS-CNE. The 68 participants appreciated the topic and requested for more pediatric related sessions in future. The recently elected executive committee has introduced a new format to CNE. According to this change topic related  pre-reading material had been mailed to PNDS members. It was expected that the material will the participants to come prepared for the session. Post- quiz sheets were distributed after the presentation. Qualifying the quiz is equivalent to 1 credit. Those who wished to claim the credit had to leave the quiz sheet with the CNE committee members; others could take it home for self evaluation. Answers to the quiz will be posted on the PNDS website (CNE page) soon.  Session evaluation forms were given. Feedback of the participants will help us to include more relevant topics and to improve the sessions in future. The CNE committee will try to incorporate other suggestions given by our members. CNE coordinator,Saima Rasheed moderated the session. Concluding remarks were given by Ayesha Zahid Khan. The next CNE is planned for December 2011. The topic will be “Vitamin D and bone health”.
