Celebrating Nutrition Month

 Healthy Snacking for Children”

 Speaker: Ms. Shelina Amir

 Date: 22nd March 2008

March is celebrated as “Nutrition Month”, all over the world. This annual nutrition education and information campaign was first initiated by the American Dietetic Association in 1973. In celebration of healthy eating, dietitians across the world unite to organize events and communications to reinforce the importance of nutrition in achieving health and wellbeing. This campaign is designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating habits by providing valuable and credible source of timely, scientifically- based food and nutrition information by qualified Nutritionist and Dietitians.

This year the theme was “Eat well and live well”. In celebration of healthy eating, PNDS organized public awareness events and communications to reinforce the importance of nutrition in achieving health and wellbeing among school going children. Two sessions covering 4 community schools (V.M Public, Play House Girls Secondary, Bahadurabad Foundation and Cutchi Memon Foundation Schools) were chosen for the public awareness program. Approximately 200 mothers and their children were invited to these sessions which covered topics of “Healthy Eating” and “Nutritious Snacking Choices”. Benefits of healthy life styles and food choices in the light of the increasing junk food consumption among children were reinforced by our speaker Ms Shelina Amir, Nutritionist Aga Khan Health Services. Both the sessions were followed by an interactive discussion with mothers, teachers and nutritionist. We are very grateful for the cooperation extended to PNDS from the school authorities for organizing these sessions. We are also thankful to Mead Johnson, IBL HealthCare for sponsor ship and Ms Rumela Masood PNDS life member, who took the initiative and was a major working force for organizing the logistics of public awareness program at Bahadurabad from the vicinity of Dhoraji colony.
